Canyoning
These excursions are run by our collaborating partner Sierra Adventure.
They are the best in the business and are responsible for the arrangements on this page.
Canyoning is an activity which uses nearly every kind of mountain progression technique to descend steep river gorges. Canyoning takes place in rivers of unspoilt beauty made up of a series of waterfalls, pools and deep rock passages cut and sculpted by water over millions of years. The gorges are normally inaccessible. A typical day’s canyoning will start with training by specialised guides. This involves the learning abseil techniques, use of specialised equipment and a safety briefing. The river descent which follows takes the group down a series of abseils on the waterfalls which can be up to 20 metres of gushing water, slides and jumps into crystal clear pools, scrambling and climbing over boulders and down gullies following the river as it snakes down the mountainside.
Tours depart from Almunecar daily at 8am. All age groups can take part in our descents, provided they have a basic level of fitness. Children under 16 must be accompanied. Participants must bring training shoes or walking boots, swimwear, towel and change of warm clothes. Snacks and drinks should be brought as tours can take up to 8 hours. We provide all other equipment necessary for the descent, including wetsuits, lifejackets, harnesses, helmets, ropes etc. All of our equipment is rigorously inspected before and after each use and replaced as necessary. The leaders, a minimum of 2 per descent, are all qualified to high standards in rope access, mountain rescue and first aid and are continually updating their techniques. Our service includes 3rd party and personal accident insurance as required by law.
There are various rivers of different levels of technical difficulty available to canyoning groups, therefore it is possible to progress over several days. Everyone will find some aspect of the descents challenging and will experience a sense of teamwork, achievement and emotion amounting to an unforgettable day.
